Wedding bliss
Last weekend I witnessed the marriage of my dear friends Brenda and Megan. Ultimately, the day turned out perfectly How could it not? From my perspective, it was really wonderful to watch the joining of family and the gathering of friends around two beautiful people. They really went all out for this, including wearing white dresses to the ceremony. It is the first, and probably last, time I will see either of them in a dress.
The ceremony was carried out by Lupé, who's well-rehearsed speech was heart-warming and tender. I watched everything from behind the video camera (I was the official videographer-by-proxy - Greg was busy as best man). Following the vows and dewey congratulations, we all sat our tables and listened to the parents and best people give speeches. Megan's friend Kieth (who gave her away) told a sad and poignant story about her dad (his friend) and the importance of all our deep connections to each other. It was truly amazing to hear such intense things that I never knew about Meg or Brenda or their relationship. Greg followed up with some much needed comic relief. He is really good at it! I can't wait for my 50th birthday roast - I'm sure he'll have some great material by then.
As the evening carried on, we mingled with both sides of the line and swilled champagne like we were high society. By late in the evening, we were all certain that there no longer was a line, and that we were now a family - some closer than others, but a family nonetheless. The thing I really like about weddings, aside from the endless flutes of champagne, is that they are great a uniter. A uniter of friends, of family, and of souls. We love you Meg and Brenda, and that isn't the free champagne talking.
