We've Gone On Holiday By Mistake

Have you ever had that feeling that you were doomed? Not in a mortal sense, but in the sense that one wrong move will lead to a series of undesirable outcomes, somewhat like a domino effect. Well, this is sort of how it went when we moved our anniversary vacation so that I could be done with my project and not have it interfere with our trip or have me feeling like I couldn't relax. After that, it seemed as though everything would slowly unravel into a vacation from hell.

Images From the Womb

It has been confirmed, we are definitely having a baby. We knew this already from the months of morning sickness, the infinitely swelling belly, and hearing the sound of the heartbeat returned by the sonic monitor. However, there is nothing like seeing a little heart pumping or little hands and feet moving to put it all into reality.

The Green Machine

Today we went to pick up our Prius at Fox car rentals. They didn't have a Prius available because the five that were supposed to be on the lot hadn't been returned on time. So instead they gave us a Honda Civic hybrid. Mel was non-plussed. I was just glad that we'd be driving a hybrid for our journey from The Bay to LA.

Beachcombing By Moonlight

About a month ago we'd registered with the Seattle Parks to attend a winter solstice beach expedition and invited some friends and family to join us. The group convened at Mee Kwa Mooks park near Alki at 8pm when the tide would be at its lowest. For those who don't watch the tides, the solstices have one small exchange of water and one large exchange of water. Full moons also increase the tidal exchange, so this low tide was a "low low tide" - probably the lowest of the year and definitely exposing a great amount of sea life that live around the tidal zone.

My Daemon and I

Following Meg's lead, I took the test of 20 personality questions on the Golden Compass Web site to find out who my daemon was. A daemon, for the uninitiated, is sort of like your external soul with a personality of it's own. It always takes the form of an animal and is of opposing gender. My daemon is apparently a lioness named Artemis. I have a feeling that she and I could make a great team.

Computer recycling program

Saturday morning I was watching the news and heard that I could recycle my computer down at the Safeco field parking lot between 9am and 3pm... for free! Finally I had a reason to unload that computer-sized paper weight that's been sitting around in my basement for the last 2 years. I kept telling myself that I was going to turn it into a server, but I had to be honest that I was never going to spend the time and money to do that.

Untimely deaths of Lone Fir Cemetery

Halloween wasn't looking to be very spooktacular this year. Our real mission was to visit with G&J down in Portland. Nonetheless, those guys managed to find an interesting happening down at the Lone Fir cemetery, so we loaded our thermoses with Irish coffee and drove over. We had to wait a short spell to get in, which was fine because it gave us time to sip the coffee and bump into the curator of the 24-hour Church of Elvis (previously believed to be gone for eternity). It is in storage, but looking for a more permanent place to inhabit.

Wedding bliss

Last weekend I witnessed the marriage of my dear friends Brenda and Megan. Ultimately, the day turned out perfectly How could it not? From my perspective, it was really wonderful to watch the joining of family and the gathering of friends around two beautiful people. They really went all out for this, including wearing white dresses to the ceremony. It is the first, and probably last, time I will see either of them in a dress.

Lieutenant Colonel James Carberry

Most of my life, I hadn't known Uncle Jim. Though he was the brother of my Grandfather, their relationship was tumultuous and therefore his presence in our family was somewhat shrouded. My father did not abide by his father, and maintained a strong bond with Jim over the years. I remember meeting him and his wife, Kiki, when I was about 11 or 12. I'd never formed a bond with him and wasn't in touch for many years of my life. I wasn't there for him when Kiki passed away, in fact I didn't even know when or how she died.

An Event Apart - Seattle, 2007

For two whole days I sat in an auditorium listening to some of the Web industry's top professionals. I don't usually go to conferences, but the individuals who were speaking have greatly influenced my work. There is no doubt that there were smart folks in the room. I have been learning to give presentations lately, and I know it isn't easy to put your knowledge into a time box. They all kept me engaged, and folks like Eric Meyer and Seattle's own Mike Davidson kept me at ease.
