Work Week Away

I flew down to San Fran to work from the office on Battery Street and reconnect with other Lindens. It was really nice to see those people in person again (or for the first time). Arriving on Sunday in any place in the U.S. is always a strange endeavor, especially if your room is in/near the financial district. Still, it was good to be back in the city by the bay and gather my senses of it again.

We've Gone On Holiday By Mistake

Have you ever had that feeling that you were doomed? Not in a mortal sense, but in the sense that one wrong move will lead to a series of undesirable outcomes, somewhat like a domino effect. Well, this is sort of how it went when we moved our anniversary vacation so that I could be done with my project and not have it interfere with our trip or have me feeling like I couldn't relax. After that, it seemed as though everything would slowly unravel into a vacation from hell.

Retreating to the Olympic Peninsula

It happened as a divine coincidence that I would be between jobs the same week as my 6th wedding anniversary. Sometimes life hands you flowers instead of lemons. In this case it was a chance to kick off a glorious summer and visit the coast and family before I start something new and exciting!

No Go Houston

I've been dodging writing about this one, because my life has been in chaos around it all spring. The short of it is that at the end of March I went on vacation expecting to come home to a new position I'd applied for at The Seattle Times. When I got back, the company had laid off 130+ people and frozen any open head count. Meanwhile, a former boss of mine had been growing a new team for Hearst Communications down in Houston and asked me to come down and interview.

The Journey Onward

Visiting San Francisco was really fun, but we spent a lot of our time reliving our past there. It made me recognize that it isn't my town anymore, I don't live there, I need to let go of the past. I think it became apparent when we went to Trieste for coffee - it is the same charming café, but the coffee wasn't nearly as good as I remembered. Did it change or did I? Sorry, that is rhetorical, I've changed for sure.

The Transition Into Spring

Officially, spring was on the 20th. The only excitement I could muster was that the days had been getting longer and some of the flowers were beginning to pop out. While I was leaving the office to prep for vacation the clouds became black (and I mean black) and a shiver ran through me as I threw up my hood and cursed the winds. "I'm leaving you, Seattle... and I may not return", I threatened emptily.

The fall colors of Forest Park

Every time I come to P-town I look to see Forest Park cascading across the ridge of the west hills. This time it was mandatory. Fall was in full color and it had been warm for days on end with no signs of shifting. We drove up Burnside. I mean all the way up Burnside, until it stopped being Burnside. Deb left us the map guides to Forest Park, and you must be armed with these maps if you are to navigate the extensive trail system or even find your trail head. Even with the maps, we passed ours and had to turn back to relocated it.

DC Hides Its Children at the National Zoo

On our last day we decided to walk around Woodley Park and visit the zoo. We had to make it a quick trip because we needed to get on the Metro around mid day to schlep ourselves back to the airport. Woodley Park is beautiful, quite large, and equipped with a fitness trail that connects to Georgetown. I noted that DC seemed void of children and pets, but then we would arrive at a certain place and it would be jam-packed with them. Naturally you would expect to find them at a zoo, but it was almost as if they weren't allowed to be anywhere else!

You Can't Shop at the National Mall

On our second day in DC, Mel and I went to the National Mall to enjoy the Smithsonian Institute exhibits. One of the most glorious things about DC is that all museums are free to the public! The Smithsonian is huge, and it is entirely impossible to see it all in a day. In fact, I would say that if you went every day for a week, you still might not finish it. Mel wanted to see Julia Child's kitchen, but the American Heritage museum was under renovation. We realistically chose two museums - the National Air and Space Museum and the Hirschhorn Museum of Sculpture.

Shuffling Through Georgetown

I came to DC for a memorial service, but stuck around for a couple of days to take in the city. The small amount of time I spent trying to navigate in a car was enough for me to forsake driving there ever again. The Metro, however, was a breeze - exactly like BART in the Bay Area, and so easy to get around the city in!
